Automation: Fuel for the Crude Hauling Industry
Mobility for Fleet CrudePac’s™ in-cab computing software is used by crude gathering and hauling fleets to communicate directly with oil company or collection contractor accounting, planning and dispatch systems. Designed to automate transactions in real-time, CrudePac allows users to achieve significant cost savings, increased efficiencies and improved overall customer satisfaction.
CrudePac’s intrinsically safe handheld computers empower fleet drivers to do their jobs with greater accuracy and in less time. Connected to high-resolution printers, wireless communication and vehicle tracking systems, CrudePac users can calculate crude volume electronically at both gathering and off-load points. Drivers still take pre-load, post-load and BS&W measurements, but CrudePac quickly and accurately determines the actual crude volume within a load.
Not only do customers benefit from CrudePac’s automation and paperless transaction tracking features, but CrudePac immediately communicates all data directly to back-office systems for storage and retrieval. CrudePac’s electronic signature technology and on-site ticket printing capabilities provide proof of delivery, volume consensus and accurate transaction detail. The use of this real-time interface between fleet managers and dispatch enables tighter operational control and increased fleet productivity.
According to Brett Williams, TouchStar director of sales and marketing, CrudePac is unique in its focus on the automation of processes specific to crude gathering and hauling.
“We’ve taken everything that used to be done by hand or was redundant and put the powerful automation technology of CrudePac behind it,” Williams said. “CrudePac creates efficiencies in every part of the business through its sophisticated, yet user-friendly automation technology. Best of all, it immediately and positively impacts the company’s bottom line.”

Putting More Time in Your Hands
According to a group of 125 service executives, the need to complete projects on time is the top pressure they face. With that in mind, the Aberdeen Group conducted a recent study to determine how leading service-based firms are using technology and optimizing processes to better manage complex tasks.
Service-based businesses that are successful in meeting project or delivery deadlines share the following characteristics:
- They are almost twice as likely as all other firms to centralize the function of scheduling across the entire organization
- They are 20 percent more likely as all other firms to have implemented scheduling and business intelligence solutions
- They are twice as likely as all other firms to have equipped their technicians with rugged mobile devices
The link is clear. No matter the industry, the key to becoming a best-in-class service company is the effective installation and usage of mobile applications and devices.

Tech Talk - Is brighter really better?
By David Thornley
TouchStar Application Development

Contrary to popular belief, a mobile device screen’s brightness does not determine quality -- an important factor to consider during the procurement process.
The brightness of a handheld computer screen is commonly measured in nits. And, no, not the creepy crawly kind. Nits are actually the SI equivalent to candelas per square meter – or cd/m2. Other factors, such as the display type, contrast ratio (ratio between white and black) and specialized anti-reflection filters, can have a major impact on overall visual quality and must also be considered prior to purchase.
It’s important to remember that the ambient outdoor brightness on a typical sunny day is around 200 to 400 nits which mean that a non-transflective display needs at least that number of nits to compete with its surroundings
The higher the nit count, however, the more heat and, ultimately, battery power consumed – the classic catch-22 situation. Choose your device carefully as great strides are being made with sunlight readable display technology.
